The research work is entitled “Integrating cultural enhancement in 2nde and 1ère —— using “Project Britain” and “American English” websites as sources for reading materials.”
As such, it revolves around three main key terms: cultural enhancement, websites and reading. In this sense, the work attempts to provide a technique for broadening students’ exposure to target cultures, predominantly British and American ones as the foundation cultures of the native speakers. Indeed, it supports the use of websites as authentic materials which students could explore in classrooms via reading activities. The main hypothesis underlying the work is the following: “reading texts from educational websites constitutes a beneficial activity to stimulate cultural reflections in 2nde and 1ère classrooms”.
Inspirations for the research work are derived from the author’s personal experiences in high schools and class observations during the training at lycées. In fact, Malagasy high school students lack knowledge about target cultures. Additionally, the curriculum was developed 30 years ago meaning that it needs innovating. With the evolution in the field of communication thanks to modern technology, the majority of ELT teachers are not accustomed to the use of the Internet. They still stick to the use of traditional textbook materials mostly published in the 90s. In parallel, since English is being introduced earlier in primary schools, ELT in high schools has to pursue new goals and increase the level of teaching. The reasons stated above have led to the belief that much emphasis should be put on cultural development.
Consequently, the objectives of this research work consist of sensitizing teachers about the extreme importance of conducting cultural activities inside the classroom. The memoir serves as a guide for teachers to develop students’ cultural skills especially compensating students’ lack of cultural knowledge. In this respect, introduction of cultural enhancement enables improvement of reading applications. This thesis strives to establish new purposes for reading and suggest innovating techniques for reading. Another purpose is to integrate ICT in classrooms so as to motivate students to learn the language. This thesis strives to establish new purposes and suggest innovating techniques for reading. Thus, the main concern remains to train learners to become efficient communicators who are able to cultivate attitudes of respect and tolerance towards cultural differences in an age of globalization. In other words, it adapts ELT to the status of the English language as an international language.
