8 good reasons to become a lifeguard

From the top of their raised chairs, behind their sunglasses, the lifeguards watch over and ensure safety in the swimming areas. But the image we have of them is often reductive because they also have other missions.

The implementation of entertainment and activities such as aquagym or sessions for baby swimmers and especially the teaching of swimming to children and adults, from initiation to improvement. A diverse and exciting job in which you never get bored! We explain how to become a lifeguard in our previous article.

  1. BECAUSE THE TRAINING WILL NOT COST YOU A CENT AND YOU WILL EVEN BE PAID!

This is the good news of the day, some organizations, including the UCPA, offer fully-funded training to become a lifeguard (MNS ). These organizations will even take all the necessary steps with you from the region or Pôle Emploi.

The second good news is that the training is carried out on a work-study basis, therefore paid.

During your apprenticeship year, you will not spend a penny and therefore you will be paid every month.

  1. BECAUSE IT IS A PROFESSION THAT YOU CAN EXERCISE INDOORS OR OUTDOORS AS YOU WISH

We often have the image of the lifeguard screwed to his pool chair, but the activity does not stop at the indoor pools. During the summer months, some of the lifeguards also work outdoors, whether in campsite swimming pools, in recreation centers, or in natural environments: sea, ocean, and lakes.

  1. BECAUSE WE ARE LOOKING FOR LIFEGUARDS THROUGHOUT USA, ALL YEAR ROUND

Know that there is no shortage of work with lifeguard training and for your first job, you will be spoiled for choice. Employability is excellent and you can choose where and how you want to work all year round.

Each year, in the USA, 5,000 MNS are recruited and the rate of access to employment is 100%

If you are looking for stability, you will find 35-hour contracts, year-round, often indoors. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a more adventurous life, you can spend the summer season in a leisure center, camping, or with your feet in the sand on the beach before spending the winter months teaching indoors. It’s up to you!

  1. BECAUSE YOU ARE LITERALLY GOING TO SAVE LIVES (AND NOT JUST IN ALERT MODE IN MALIBU!)

So yes, if someone is in difficulty, the lifeguard is there to ensure his safety or even save him from drowning in extreme cases. But big news: this is not how you will save the most lives!

In fact, it is by teaching people to swim that you will avoid drowning

The lifeguard’s first role is not to directly save drowning people but to teach them how to swim well so that they never find themselves in difficulty in the water. It is therefore a really useful profession that avoids many accidents every year. Unfortunately, there has been a 30% increase in accidental drownings in the USA between 2015 and 2018 (source: Sante Publique)

  1. BECAUSE BEING A LIFEGUARD MEANS SAYING GOODBYE TO ROUTINE

Between teaching sessions, activities, and supervision, a lifeguard’s day is never monotonous. And this is also due to the diversity of the audiences he meets: this ranges from 4-month-old baby swimmers to the elderly, including children, teenagers, and adults.

We must therefore constantly adapt according to the expectations of each audience: we do not behave in the same way with children in the context of school swimming and older people who come to relax.

  1. BECAUSE HELPING SOMEONE OVERCOME THEIR FEAR OF WATER IS PRICELESS!

Another super satisfying aspect of the job: special courses for aquaphobes, that is to say, people who have a real apprehension of the aquatic environment, even a panic fear of water.

Seeing a person arrive afraid to put a toe in the pool and then walk away from swimming 25 meters is very rewarding

And in general, the human contact and the transmission of knowledge that the job brings is something very enriching.

  1. BECAUSE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO LIVE OFF YOUR PASSION

When you choose a profession in sport, it’s usually that you’re passionate about it and it’s a real chance to be able to make a living from it. Doing what you love the most day in and day out is super fulfilling and it is definitely the best career choice you can make. And if you want, you’ll be able to go premium you entered î dinner on your break time!

  1. BECAUSE TAUNTING THOSE WHO WORK IN AN OFFICE WHEN YOU’RE IN FLIP-FLOPS ALL YEAR ROUND IS HIGHLY SATISFYING

Last but not least, tap dancing all year round, whether in the pool or at the beach, has a really nice side.

You will never go to work in a suit in the heatwave and that’s a real advantage

Some will say that you are on vacation all year round but we suspect these people to be a little jealous! Each profession has its uniform and yours will be just one of the coolest there is.
